Understanding the Condition

What Is Depression?

Depressive disorders encompass a spectrum of conditions marked by persistent changes in mood, cognition, and physical functioning that extend well beyond ordinary sadness. Major depressive disorder involves episodes of pervasive low mood accompanied by alterations in sleep, appetite, energy, concentration, and self-perception. Persistent depressive disorder, formerly known as dysthymia, presents a more chronic but sometimes less acute pattern that can erode quality of life over years. These conditions frequently co-occur with anxiety, substance use concerns, or medical illness, making accurate differential diagnosis an essential first step in effective treatment.

How We Treat Depression

Treatment Approach

Care begins with an 80-minute evaluation designed to capture the full clinical picture, including symptom chronology, prior treatment responses, and psychosocial context. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) provides structured techniques for identifying and modifying the negative thought patterns that perpetuate depressive cycles. Psychodynamic psychotherapy explores how relational history and unconscious processes contribute to present-day mood disturbance. Humanistic and existential approaches address the loss of meaning or purpose that often accompanies depression, while Adlerian therapy focuses on restoring social engagement and a sense of belonging. When the clinical presentation warrants pharmacological intervention, medication management is integrated directly into the therapeutic process, allowing continuous alignment between treatment modalities and observable progress.
