Understanding the Condition

What Is PTSD?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) develops in response to exposure to actual or threatened death, serious injury, or violence. The condition manifests through four symptom clusters: intrusive re-experiencing of the traumatic event, persistent avoidance of reminders, negative alterations in cognition and mood, and marked changes in arousal and reactivity. These symptoms must persist for more than one month and cause significant distress or functional impairment to meet diagnostic criteria. PTSD frequently co-occurs with depression, anxiety, and substance use, complicating the clinical picture and underscoring the value of a comprehensive evaluation before treatment begins.

How We Treat PTSD

Treatment Approach

The initial 80-minute evaluation establishes the nature, severity, and chronology of trauma exposure alongside any co-occurring conditions. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) forms the therapeutic foundation, helping patients identify and reframe the distorted beliefs that sustain traumatic responses. Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) provides structured, graduated confrontation with avoided stimuli, reducing the power of trauma-related triggers over time. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) equips patients with distress tolerance and emotional regulation skills essential for stabilization before deeper processing. Psychodynamic exploration examines how trauma has shaped relational patterns and self-concept, while Gestalt and humanistic approaches foster present-moment awareness and reconnection with personal agency. Medication management addresses persistent hyperarousal, sleep disruption, or mood symptoms when pharmacological support can accelerate therapeutic gains.
